‘BUDDY’ ROGERS HAS CHAT WITH HOOVER
Washington, Feb. 20 (UP)

Charles “Buddy” Rogers, of Kansas, actor, called on President Hoover at the White House today to pay his respects.
“The president was very genial,” Rogers said, “but I thought he looked a little tired. He must work very hard at his job.”
Rogers, who is appearing in musical revue in Washington, was presented by Senator Capper of his home state.




EDNA PURVIANCE IS CRITICALLY ILL
Hollywood, Feb. 20 (UP)

Edna Purviance, film actress who gained fame as a leading woman for Charles Chaplin, comedian, was reported near death tonight in a Hollywood hospital.
Miss Purviance was suffering from acute heart disease and an abdominal disorder, it was said. Her physician admitted her condition was so serious that an operation could not be attempted immediately.




ACTOR UNDER KNIFE
Hollywood, Feb. 20 (UP)

Erich Von Stroheim, screen actor and director, was reported resting comfortably to-day after an operation in which a tumor was removed from his neck. Physicians said he would probably be confined to bed for a week or ten days.




ASSETS OF VALENTINO ESTATE $130,000
Los Angeles, Feb. 20 (UP)

Assets of the estate of the late Rudolph Valentino, motion picture idol, will total about $130,000, it was revealed in court today, but claims, mortgages and other encumbrances may absorb them.
A petition for the partial distribution of the estate's assets filed by Alberto Guglielmo, a brother, and Maria Guglielmo Strada, a sister of the dead actor, was heard by Judge Albert L. Stephens.

GETS PILOT’S LICENSE
Hollywood, Feb. 20 (UP)

Harry Bannister, husband of Ann Harding, film and stage star, to-day received a government license as a private airplane pilot.

HEADS EXPEDITION
Heading an expedition of photographers, hunters and archeologists, Gary Cooper has penetrated the wilderness in the center of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika, Africa, according to a cable received by his father, Judge Charles Cooper. Cooper is on leave of absence from the studios and will return to the film colony in March.




CHIEF FEMININE ROLE
Carole Lombard will play the chief feminine role in the film version of Dashiell Hammett’s best selling mystery novel, “The Glass Key.” She will appear with Chester Morris and Regis Toomey.





MANY LANGUAGES
Mona Maris, who plays the fiery dancer with Buster Keaton in “The Passionate Plumber” is perfectly at home with the foreign players at the studios. Whoever they are, she can speak their language. Born in Buenos Aires, educated in Berlin, Paris and Spain, she speaks German, Spanish, English and French. And – she can speak English with any one of the other accents as well.

WITH EASTERN STUDIO
Stuart Erwin is back at the Paramount New York studio, where he appeared last year with Helen Kane in “Dangerous Nan McGrew.” He now has a role in “Sensation,” the Claudette Colbert-Edmund Lowe starring vehicle, which Stuart Walker is preparing to direct.

COURTROOM SCENES
Courtroom scenes seem to be the rule rather than the exception so far as the Paramount New York studio’s feature product is concerned. “The Wiser Sex,” now nearing completion, has one, as did “The Cheat,” ‘Night Angel,” “My Sin,” and “Honor Among Lovers.”
